Thieves Oil Recipe + Other Germ Busting Oils
If you’re unfamiliar with the story of Thieves Oil, legend has it that a group of tomb robbers successfully looted graves who’s occupants died from the Bubonic Plague, a highly infectious, easily transmittable, and lethal disease that wiped out a huge number of French citizens in the 1400’s. A truly scary pandemic.
When the French government caught wind of thieves robbing graves without contraction, they were arrested and faced the punishment of being burned alive. They offered pardon of this sentence on one condition; to reveal their secret of resisting infection.
Being spice traders, the group revealed a secret perfume they applied to their hands, wrists, temples and feet; a very potent blend of essential oils that became known as Thieves Oil, the recipe of which I’ve included in this article.
In surmise to the tale of the Plague Thieves, the promise was upheld; rather than being burned at the stake, they were hanged for their crimes.
We still use this blend today and have modern scientific evidence to back up it’s germ fighting claims. I’ve seen many experiments with various bacterias growing in petri dishes, with controls and comparisons to other cleaners. Here are a couple of experiments with details and sources in the captions…

Um, ew, right? So here’s a simple Thieves Oil recipe that I use (and go through like crazy):
Thieves Oil Recipe
You will need:
Small dark glass dropper bottle (go for a dark glass as the strong oils can eat away at plastic, and the darkness will prevent the oils from breaking down over time)
40 drops clove bud essential oil
35 drops lemon essential oil
25 drops cinnamon bark essential oil
15 drops eucalyptus essential oil
15 drops rosemary essential oil
Directions:
Mix together all oils in dropper bottle and voila! Thieves oil, baby. You can adjust your recipe give or take a little, but this is an easy one I like to use.
If you’re not up to mixing your own, you can buy my favorite brand of Thieves blend from Amazon. I do not receive any commissions from Young Living.
What are some other anti-microbial oils you can add to your DIY recipes? Glad you asked…
Oregano essential oil - antimicrobial, antiviral & antifungal (can ingested for immune & respiratory support)
Thyme essential oil - antibacterial, antifungal, & antioxidant (can also be ingested for inflammation reduction, immune & respiratory support, and as an antioxidant)
Tea Tree (aka Melaleuca) essential oil - antiviral, antibacterial, & antifungal. * DO NOT DIFFUSE *. Tea Tree oil is known as a neurotoxin for pets when inhaled.
Camphor essential oil - antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, & topical anti-inflammatory (Not recommended for ingestion)
These are just a few favorite that I like to add to my recipes for potency.
**Please note that ALL essential oils should be diluted in a carrier before any topical application. Our skin is the largest organ, incredibly absorbent, and everything that goes on it not only enters the bloodstream, but is also processed by the liver.
***Additionally, please research any oils you intend to ingest. Not all oils are culinary quality, and even if they are, too much of a good thing can end up with dire consequences. Do ya research from credible sources first!
Thank you for reading! Bright blessings and best wishes to you and your loved ones!
